WASHINGTON, D.C. - January 27, 2004 -- Beginning in February, post-secondary institutions can purchase up to 10 hours per student of live, online learner support and tutoring for $2.95 per FTE for one year. Available to first-time clients, colleges can give every student access to live Math help 24/7, an online writing lab where papers are critiqued and returned in 24 hours, and live support in Statistics, Accounting, Economics, and Chemistry for less than what it would cost to hire a single tutor.

"This plan lets schools give their students a greater level of service than they already receive and experiment with online learner support and tutoring at a fixed price," says Burck Smith, CEO of SMARTHINKING. "Every post-secondary system in the country is seeking ways to save money while maintaining or improving services. Using the Internet to offer learner support services anytime, anywhere makes economic and educational sense."

Already the Vermont State College System, Virginia Community College System, and 16 schools have signed up for the offer. Colleges contract with SMARTHINKING to improve student success and retention by offering learner support anytime, anywhere, to save money by aggregating services across campuses and schools, and to increase accountability by being able to access usage data and tutoring archives. Some even use the service to fulfill accreditation requirements for distance education programs.

Through the SMARTHINKING website, students may ask questions of E-structor® Certified tutors by "dropping-in", submitting questions for next day response, and pre-scheduling sessions. In addition, all interactions are saved, permitting on-demand review and analysis by the student or institution. In the past two years, SMARTHINKING has provided over 230,000 online tutoring sessions to over 53,000 students from over 300 schools.
